The “Homage to Umbria”project
and “Assisi in the World“ festival.


From an originary common wish of the great violinist Uto Ughi and of the opera singer Laura Musella to underline through the beauty of the music the beauty of numerous architectural and artistic masterpieces present in Umbria and to make their intrinsic spirituality emerge the project “Homage to Umbria” was born.To the project ,that attracted the interest also of the Pope John Paul II° because of its spiritual and social character , is connected a series of events that every year are realised in the most particular places of Umbria and somewhere else .The most emblematic event in the Project’s existence and its testimonial was the great concert for peace that the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino artistic mass conducted by Zubin Mehta with Uto Ughi as violin soloist gave in the Upper Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi on May 30th 2002.This musical performance was attended by the highest authorities of the italian government as well as by many ambassadors and dignitaries of foreign countries. It was transmitted nationwide by the italian television and then worldwide by Rai international and Raisat.In addition.

By that time Zubin Mehta is the testimonial conductor of the project and the protagonist of various its activities.

Lorin Maazel is another famous conductor who honored the project a lot of times.

St.Caecilia National Academie is another important institution who cooperates with with Homage to Umbria project(in Orvieto Dome Easter concert in 2003, Christmas concert in 2004 and 2005, Siena Dome in 2005 and in 2006).

In 2006 Lorin Maazel with Arturo Toscanini Orchestra ,Uto Ughi, St.Caecila National Academie Chorus, The Rome Philharminics and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra conducted by Thomas Netopil consacrated the first edition of "Assisi in the world" festival that develops the same aims of the Homage to Umbria project and continues to live in it.

In St.Francis Upper Church in Assisi The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Chorus and the Toscanini Symphonic Orchestra with 4 splendid opera singers conducted by Lorin Maazel honored the second edition of "Assisi in the world" festival in 2007 with Requiem Mass by G.Verdi. Then a lot of concerts of prodigy musicians in the best churches of Assisi.

The third edition of the festival in 2008 started with the Easter concert(transmitted in eurovision by the most important national Tv Rai 1) in Orvieto Dome with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by Seiji Ozawa .The festival finished with a concert of Uto Ughi and the Rome Philharmonics in The Lyrick Theatre in Assisi. Between the first and the last concert a lot of concerts of prodigy musicians and a young orchestra in Assisi and in the most beautiful churches of Umbria.

The fourth and the fifth editions of the festival started in 2009 and in 2010 in Orvieto Dome with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by Zubin Mehta and it finished with Uto Ughi and The Rome Philharmonics in Assisi.Between the first and the last concert 12 concerts of very young and prodigy musicians and two young orchestras in Assisi and all over Umbria.

The honorary president of the project is Mauro Masi the actual general director of Rai Tv, its artistic advisor is Uto Ughi, its sovrintendente is the opera singer Laura Musella.

Since 2008 Unicef is the principal sponsorship of "Assisi in the world festival .
